Hawaii Farmers Markets: A Local's Guide to the Best Ones by Island

Short answer: for a cheap, easy date, pick a big Saturday market. Oʻahu has Kakaʻako and the KCC market, Maui has the Upcountry Farmers Market, and the Big Island has Hilo. Go early, bring cash and a reusable bag, and plan to eat breakfast there. Details by island are below. Market hours change, so check each market's own site before you go.

Oʻahu
FarmLovers Markets: FarmLovers runs Saturday markets in Kakaʻako and at Pearlridge, and a Sunday market in Kailua, all from 8 a.m. to noon according to its website. FarmLovers says USA Today ranked the Kakaʻako market the #3 farmers market in the U.S. in 2025. Kakaʻako pairs well with a walk past the neighborhood's murals. KCC Farmers Market (Kapiʻolani Community College, near Diamond Head): a long-running Saturday-morning market with prepared food alongside produce. Check the market's site for current hours.
People's Open Markets: the City and County of Honolulu runs these short, low-key markets in parks around the island. They accept EBT at every market and close on all City holidays. According to the City, the program started after Mrs. Joyce Fasi, wife of then-Mayor Frank F. Fasi, passed on residents' concerns about Honolulu's high food prices. One example: Saturdays at Kalihi Kalākaua District Park, 6:30–9:30 a.m. The City's page lists every stop and time.

Maui
Upcountry Farmers Market: Saturdays, 7–11 a.m., at Kulamalu Town Center (55 Kiopaa St, Makawao, near the football fields). The market says it has more than 100 local vendors selling fruit and vegetables, tropical flowers, fresh fish, baked goods and crafts. Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island)
Hilo Farmers Market: 20 Mamo St in historic downtown Hilo. It's open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed only on Christmas Day. Wednesday and Saturday are the big market days, with 150+ vendors. Its slogan is "From dawn til it's gone," so arrive early for the best choice. Afterward, walk along Hilo Bay or have lunch downtown. Kauaʻi
Kauaʻi has community and county-run markets around the island, but we haven't confirmed current schedules for this update. Check with the County of Kauaʻi before you go. Many Kauaʻi state parks were also affected by recent storm closures, according to the Division of State Parks, so check that too if you're pairing a market with a hike. Market-date checklist
- Go early. The best produce and prepared food sell out.
- Bring small bills and a bag. Some vendors take cards, but not all.
- Split, don't stock up. Trying three things together beats carrying 10 pounds of mango.
- Plan the next stop. A beach, a lookout or a cooking session with what you bought turns a market run into a real date.

Make it a full day
Oʻahu: Saturday at KCC, then the Diamond Head summit trail nearby (free for residents with a Hawaiʻi ID). Or Sunday in Kailua, then the Byodo-In Temple and the Pali Lookout on the way home.
Maui: the Upcountry market at 7 a.m., then a slow drive and a picnic with what you bought.
Hawaiʻi Island: the Hilo market on a Wednesday or Saturday morning, then an afternoon at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park ($30 per private vehicle, cashless) and dinner back in Hilo.
Whatever you choose, keep the first market date short and easy. If it goes well, the "let's cook what we bought" second date sets itself up.
