The Big Island is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, and a date on the Kohala Coast feels completely different from a date in Hilo. Here are the spots worth choosing, with the geographic context that matters.

Hilo side

Downtown Hilo is one of the most genuine, unspoiled small towns in Hawaii — the kind of place that hasn't been touched by resort development and retains an authenticity that the Kona side has largely lost. The farmers market (Wednesday and Saturday) is one of the best in the state, with genuinely local produce, tropical flowers, and prepared foods. The area around Banyan Drive has good walking, and the Imiloa Astronomy Center is an underrated date for people who want something interactive and interesting.

Kona/Kohala side

Kailua-Kona's waterfront on Aliʻi Drive is touristy but manageable during weekday mornings. Kaʻūpūlehu and the Kohala Coast beaches (Hapuna, Mauna Kea, ʻAnaehoʻomalu) are world-class in a way that's easy to take for granted if you live here.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is one of the most geologically active and visually dramatic places on Earth. The Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku), the Kīlauea Iki crater rim trail, and the drive along Chain of Craters Road offer completely different experiences of the same volcanic landscape. This is a genuinely extraordinary place that people who live on the Big Island sometimes stop actually seeing — going with someone for the first time is a good reason to see it fresh. If Kīlauea is actively erupting during your visit (check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory for current status), the night lava viewing adds something genuinely unforgettable.

Off the Kohala Coast near the Kona airport, night manta ray snorkeling is one of those experiences that sounds gimmicky until you're in the water in the dark watching six-foot mantas barrel-roll through plankton a foot from your face. Several operators run nightly trips. It's not for everyone — you need to be comfortable in dark water — but if both of you are, it's not a date you'll forget.
