Getting started
Is Kamaʻāina Date free to join?
Yes — joining and browsing are completely free. You can create a profile, browse singles, and send up to 5 Alohas per day at no cost. Kamaʻāina Basic ($9.99/month) and Kamaʻāina Plus ($19.99/month) unlock unlimited Alohas, advanced filters, and additional features.
Who can join Kamaʻāina Date?
Anyone 18 or older who is in Hawaiʻi: locals, military stationed here, people new to the islands, and visitors. Your profile can show which one you are, so matches know what to expect.
Can non-binary people join, and who will I see?
Yes. When you sign up, you can choose Female, Male or Non-binary as your gender, and set Show me to Everyone, Women, Men or Non-binary people. Discover only shows people when the interest goes both ways: you see someone if they fit your Show me setting and you fit theirs. You can change your gender or Show me setting anytime on the Profile tab, then tap Save.
Which islands are supported?
All six main Hawaiian islands — Oʻahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi. Your home island is part of your profile and is visible to potential matches.
How do I sign up?
Click "Join Free" from the homepage, enter your name, age, gender, home island, email, and a password. After confirming your email, you'll be taken straight to your browse deck. The whole process takes about two minutes.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
On the Sign in page, tap Forgot? next to the password field (or open the
Reset Your Password page), enter the email you signed up with and tap Send Reset Link. Open the link in that email to choose a new password; once it is updated you are signed in and taken to the app. Not in your inbox within a minute or so? Check Spam or Promotions, or send another link after 60 seconds. If a link has expired or was already used, just request a new one.
Matching & messaging
How does matching work?
When you send someone an Aloha (a like) and they Aloha you back, it's a match — and you can start messaging each other. Free accounts can send 5 Alohas per day. Kamaʻāina Basic and Plus members get unlimited Alohas.
Can I filter who I see in Discover?
Yes, on every plan. In Discover you can narrow who you see by gender, age range, island, an interest (like hiking), why someone is here (local, military, visiting or new to the islands), what they're looking for (dating, friends or something serious), and a free “Verified only” switch for photo-verified profiles. Kamaʻāina Plus adds advanced filters for kids, drinking, smoking and height.
Can I see who liked me?
Yes, with Kamaʻāina Plus. Plus members see everyone who has sent them an Aloha they haven't answered yet, and can like back or pass. Free and Basic members see how many people have liked them.
Is there a message limit?
No. Messaging is free on every plan. Once you've matched with someone, you can message each other as much as you want with any membership level, including free.
Will I get an email when I match or get a message?
Yes, if you want them. Email alerts are on by default and tell you when you get a new match or a new message. We send at most one email every few hours, and it shows only the person's first name, never the message text. You can turn alerts off anytime in your Profile, or with the unsubscribe link in any alert email.
What happens if I run out of Alohas?
Free members get 5 Alohas per day — they reset every 24 hours. If you want unlimited Alohas, upgrading to Kamaʻāina Basic or Plus removes the daily limit entirely.
Profiles & verification
Are profiles verified?
Photo verification is optional. It's free and takes about a minute: you copy a quick pose in a live selfie, and we compare it automatically with your profile photos (the selfie isn't stored if it matches). If the automatic check can't confirm it, a person reviews it. Verified profiles show a checkmark badge, and anyone can turn on the free “Verified only” filter in Discover. You can message your matches whether or not you verify.
Can I pause my profile without deleting it?
There is no pause button right now. If you have Kamaʻāina Plus, turn on Incognito (Profile tab, under Kamaʻāina Plus tools) and only people you have sent an Aloha to can see you in Discover. You can also stop opening the app for a while; your profile and matches stay as they are. To leave completely, go to the Profile tab and tap Delete my account, which permanently removes your profile, photos, matches and messages.
How do I edit my profile?
Go to the Profile section in the app after signing in. You can update your bio, prompt answers, interests, photo, and preferences at any time.
Safety & privacy
How do I report someone?
Tap Report on their profile (from Discover) or at the top of your chat with them. Choose what's going on: fake profile or catfish, may be under 18, harassment or threats, inappropriate or explicit photos, scam, money request or spam, something that happened in person, or something else. Add optional details (up to 500 characters) and tap Send report. Also block them is ticked by default, so they disappear for you right away; untick it if you only want to report. Reports are private: the other person is not told who reported them. A report that someone may be under 18 puts their account on hold for an age check. In danger right now? Call 911. You can also email
kamadate@proton.me.
How do I block someone?
Open their profile from Discover, or your chat with them, and tap Block, then confirm. It works right away: you stop seeing each other in Discover and neither of you can message the other. You can also block someone while reporting them (Also block them is ticked by default). To undo it, go to the Profile tab, scroll to Blocked members and tap Unblock.
Can I unmatch or unblock someone?
Yes. To unmatch, open your chat with that person and tap Unmatch; the conversation closes for both of you. To unblock someone, go to the Profile tab, scroll to Blocked members and tap Unblock next to their name. Once unblocked, they may see you in Discover again and you can match again.
Is my personal information private?
Your email address is never shown to other users. Only the information you choose to put on your profile — your display name, age, island, photos, and bio — is visible to other members. Read our full
Privacy Policy for complete details on how we handle your data.
Subscriptions & billing
What's the difference between Basic and Plus?
Kamaʻāina Basic ($9.99/month) gives you unlimited Alohas. Kamaʻāina Plus ($19.99/month) includes everything in Basic plus see who liked you, read receipts, one free 30-minute Profile Boost each month (no extra charge), incognito browsing, and advanced filters (kids, drinking, smoking, height). Messaging your matches, typing indicators and the gender, age and island filters are free for everyone. Pay by card or PayPal. Both plans renew automatically each month until you cancel from the Profile tab.
What is an Aloha, and when can I message someone?
An Aloha is a free one-tap like with no message attached. In Discover, tap Send Aloha on a profile you like or Pass to skip. When the other person sends you an Aloha back (or you tap Like back in Likes you), it is a match and a chat opens. Messaging is only between mutual matches, so nobody can message you unless you both sent an Aloha, and messaging your matches is free on every plan. Free accounts can send up to 5 Alohas per day; Kamaʻāina Basic and Kamaʻāina Plus remove that limit.
How does the monthly Profile Boost work?
The Profile Boost is a Kamaʻāina Plus feature. In the app, go to Profile > Kamaʻāina Plus tools and tap Use my free monthly boost. For the next 30 minutes your profile is shown first in Discover to members who would already see you there, so their filters and your incognito setting still apply. Plus includes one free boost per calendar month at no extra charge, and boosts are not sold separately. After you use it, the button shows Monthly boost used until the next month.
Do you use credits, coins or pay-per-message?
No. Kamaʻāina Date has no credits, coins, tokens or pay-per-message charges. Sending an Aloha (a free one-tap like) and messaging your matches never cost anything per use. The only paid options are two flat monthly subscriptions, Kamaʻāina Basic ($9.99/month) and Kamaʻāina Plus ($19.99/month), billed by card or PayPal and cancelable anytime from the Profile tab.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel anytime from the Profile tab in the app. Paid by card? Tap Manage subscription; your access continues until the end of your current billing period. Paid with PayPal? Tap Cancel PayPal subscription (or cancel in your PayPal account under Automatic payments); you will not be charged again, and your access continues until the end of your current billing period. Email
kamadate@proton.me if you need help canceling.
Do you offer refunds?
Subscriptions are non-refundable once a billing period has started, but you can cancel at any time to prevent future charges. If you believe you were charged incorrectly, contact us at
kamadate@proton.me and we'll make it right.
How do I delete my account?
You can do it yourself in the app. Go to the Profile tab, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete my account, then type DELETE to confirm. This permanently removes your profile, photos, matches and messages. If you have a paid plan, tap Manage subscription on the same screen and cancel it first, because deleting your account does not cancel billing. If anything goes wrong, email
kamadate@proton.me from your account email and we'll handle it.
Can I hide my profile while I browse?
Yes, with Kamaʻāina Plus. Go to the Profile tab and, under Kamaʻāina Plus tools, tick Incognito. While it is on, only people you have sent an Aloha to can see you in Discover, so you can look around without showing up for everyone else. Untick it anytime to be visible again. Incognito is a Kamaʻāina Plus feature, so the toggle shows once you have Plus.
