Rainy Day Date Ideas in Hawaiʻi, Island by Island
Part of our Hawaiʻi dating guides.
Quick answer: Hawaiʻi's rainy season runs from about October to April, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. When it rains, trade the beach for a museum, planetarium, aquarium or café. Good picks are Bishop Museum and HoMA on Oʻahu, Maui Ocean Center, ʻImiloa in Hilo, and Kauaʻi Museum in Līhuʻe.
A rained-out beach day doesn't have to cancel a date. Whether you grew up here, just got stationed here, or are visiting for a week, here's how to keep plans going when the showers roll in, island by island, plus the safety rules that matter most in the wet months.
When is the rainy season in Hawaiʻi?
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu says most of Hawaiʻi has only two seasons: "summer," between May and October, and "winter," between October and April. Hawaiʻi's heaviest rains come from winter storms during those October-to-April months (source).
That doesn't mean all-day rain. The NWS notes that in winter it's unusual for rain to last more than a few hours, so even on wet days the sun usually comes out. Showers are most common on the windward (east) sides of the islands and near the mountains, so the leeward side is often drier. October deserves extra care: the NWS says more flash flooding happens in October than in any other month.

Is it safe to hike or swim when it rains in Hawaiʻi?
Save stream crossings, waterfall hikes and valley trails for dry weather. Hawaiʻi State Parks warns that the islands' clear, gently flowing streams can quickly become deep, muddy torrents. It says never to cross a flooded stream, and to wait, because the water may drop as quickly as it rose.
On the road, the NWS says just 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult, and 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars. Never drive or walk into flood water, and never drive around barriers on a flooded road.
- Check the NWS Honolulu forecast for flood watches and flash flood warnings before you head out.
- If a trail or road is closed, pick an indoor plan instead.
- Ocean conditions change with storms too. Swim only where it's safe, and follow lifeguards and posted signs.
Should a rainy first date move indoors at someone's place?
No. If rain changes your first-date plans, move it to another public spot like a museum or café, not someone's home. Get there on your own, tell a friend where you'll be, and keep it short. Our first-date safety guide and safety tips cover the rest.
Rainy day tips for visitors, newcomers and military
If you're visiting or just moved here, rain on one side of an island doesn't mean rain everywhere. The leeward side is often drier, so a short drive can change your day. Be upfront about your plans when you're meeting someone new. Our guides for people new to Hawaiʻi or visiting and for people stationed in Hawaiʻi have more tips.
