First-date safety and romance scams in Hawaiʻi
Meet in public, tell a friend, get yourself there and home, and never send money to someone you haven't met. On Kamaʻāina Date you can block, report or unmatch anyone from their profile or your chat.
Before the date
- Video chat first: a quick call confirms they're who they say they are.
- Tell a friend: share who you're meeting, where, and when.
- Get there yourself: drive, ride-share or take TheBus. Don't depend on a stranger for a ride, especially between islands.
Romance scam warning signs
- They ask for money: for gift cards, crypto, wire transfers or “investment” tips. That's the clearest sign of a scam.
- They can't meet: always deployed, offshore or overseas, with no video calls.
- They move fast: declaring love quickly and pushing you to leave the app for another messenger.
Report scams to the FTC and the FBI's IC3. See also how to spot fake profiles.
