Best Water Activities for Couples in Hawaii (Beyond Just Swimming)

Snorkeling in clear blue Hawaiian waters with tropical fish

Hawaii's ocean geography — warm water, living reef systems, reliable wind patterns, and near-shore whale and dolphin populations — creates water activity opportunities that don't exist in most places. Here are the ones worth actually doing.

Snorkeling

Hanauma Bay (Oahu) — Still one of the best snorkeling spots in Hawaii despite its well-managed tourist status. The reef is recovering well under the protection program. Advance reservations are required and fill weeks out. Entry fee applies. The marine education video they show before you enter is actually informative.

Molokini (Maui) — The submerged volcanic crater offshore from South Maui is one of the most productive snorkeling and diving sites in the state. Visibility commonly exceeds 100 feet and the fish life is exceptional. Several operators run morning snorkel boats — choose a smaller boat if you want a less crowded experience. Book directly with DLNR-permitted operators.

Kealakekua Bay (Big Island) — A state marine conservation district with excellent snorkeling around the Captain Cook Monument. Access is either by kayak (permits required) or by permitted boat tour.

Kayaking

Kailua Bay (Oahu) — Paddle out to the Mokulua Islands, two bird sanctuary islets offshore from Kailua Beach. Two Good Kayaks rents from the Kailua Beach area and the paddle to the islands is manageable for most fitness levels. The landing beach on Moku Nui (the larger island) is one of the more secluded beaches accessible on Oahu.

Nā Pali Coast (Kauai) — The 17-mile Nā Pali Coast is only accessible by sea or on foot. In summer (May-September), when the water is calmer, experienced kayakers can paddle the coastline stopping at sea caves and empty beaches. In winter the swells make this dangerous. Permitted tour operators are the safe choice. DLNR Nā Pali Coast info here.

Surfing lessons

Taking a surf lesson together as a date is underrated — the shared experience of being bad at something and getting slightly better at it together creates a different kind of connection than a standard activity date. Waikiki is the best place for lessons in Hawaii (the wave profile is ideal for beginners), and most operators on the beach rent boards and offer lessons. Oahu's official tourism resources list permitted surf schools.

Whale watching

From November through April, humpback whales are in Hawaiian waters. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is centered in the channels between Maui, Molokai, and Lanai — which is why whale watching from the Maui coastline is so reliable during season. You don't necessarily need a boat — the whales are visible from shore at many points on the Maui coast, but boat tours get you closer to the full surface behavior.
