Inter-Island Travel in Hawaii: The Local's Guide to Island Hopping
Hawaii's six main islands are connected by a functioning inter-island air network that makes visiting multiple islands genuinely practical — not the complicated multi-city trip that many mainlanders imagine. Here's how it actually works.
Flying between islands
Hawaiian Airlines operates the most comprehensive inter-island network, with multiple daily flights between Honolulu and each major island. Mokulele Airlines serves smaller airports including Kapalua on Maui, Kalaupapa on Molokai, and Lanai City — routes that Hawaiian doesn't serve. Southwest Airlines entered the Hawaii market and now competes on the major routes.
Flight times: Oahu to Maui is 25 minutes. Oahu to Kauai is 30 minutes. Oahu to Big Island is 45 minutes. These are genuinely short flights — shorter than many people's commutes — which makes island hopping feel very different from mainland multi-city travel.
Molokai and Lanai — the two islands people skip
Molokai and Lanai are the two main islands that most Hawaii visitors never reach, and for people who live in Hawaii, that makes them the most compelling destinations for a genuine escape. Molokai has deliberately resisted large-scale resort development — the island's residents have voted multiple times against development proposals — which makes it feel completely unlike the rest of Hawaii's tourism infrastructure. It's quiet, agricultural, and genuinely remote-feeling despite being 25 miles from Maui. Lanai is the opposite direction: Four Seasons operates both of Lanai's luxury resorts, and the island (which is majority-owned by Larry Ellison) has become a playground for high-end travel. Both are worth experiencing for completely different reasons.
A weekend island-hopping date
A Friday evening flight to Maui, a Saturday on the Road to Hana, Sunday morning in Pāʻia, and a Sunday evening flight home is genuinely achievable for Oahu residents and makes for an excellent relationship-deepening trip.
