North Shore
One of Kauai's best restaurants for a date — vegetarian-focused menu that's genuinely interesting rather than reluctantly vegetarian, set in an old plantation home in Hanalei. The space is intimate, the service is warm, and the menu rotates seasonally. One of those restaurants that surprises people who expected "vegetarian" to mean limited.
Spanish-influenced small plates in the heart of Hanalei town. The kind of restaurant that works well for a date because sharing tapas-style is inherently more social than everyone ordering their own entrée. Good wine list, busy but not too loud.
South and East Shore
Sunset dining right at the waterline in Poʻipū on the South Shore. The location is exceptional — during whale season you can see humpbacks from the table. The menu is fresh fish and seafood at hotel-restaurant prices, which are justified by the view and the consistency.
Peter Merriman is one of the chefs most associated with Hawaii Regional Cuisine — a movement that legitimized Hawaiian ingredients in fine dining. The Poʻipū location is oceanfront and consistently excellent. Good for a special occasion date on the south side of the island.
Not a date night restaurant in the conventional sense, but the most authentically local food experience available on Kauai — a James Beard American Classic, in business since 1952, serving saimin in a space that hasn't changed in decades. For a first or second date with someone who wants to see if you actually know Kauai, this tells them everything.
