Hawaii's hiking infrastructure is extraordinary — the trail system managed by DLNR and the Division of State Parks covers hundreds of miles across all six islands, from coastal walks to summit climbs. Here are the trails that actually work as a couple date.
Mānoa Falls Trail (Oahu) — One mile each way through a tropical forest with heavy tree cover (good in all weather), ending at a 150-foot waterfall. The trailhead is at the back of Mānoa Valley, a ten-minute drive from UH Mānoa. Arrive before 8am to avoid crowds and find parking. Mud is a feature, not a bug — bring shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
Kapalua Coastal Trail (Maui) — A paved/dirt coastal path along the northwestern Maui coastline through Kapalua and Nāpili, passing several beautiful small beaches along the way. About 1.8 miles one way. Good whale watching from the trail in winter months (November-April). Trail map available here.
Kalalau Trail to Hanakāpīʻai Beach (Kauai) — The first two miles of the famous Kalalau Trail to Hanakāpīʻai Beach is doable as a half-day round trip. The Nā Pali Coast views are as dramatic as anywhere in Hawaii. The trail requires a permit for any portion, available through the Hawaii State Parks reservation system. This is a genuinely challenging moderate trail — it's not a nature stroll.
Waimea Canyon Trail (Kauai) — Several trails descend into Waimea Canyon from the rim. The Canyon Trail and the Cliff Trail give you canyon floor access that the roadside lookouts don't. Plan for a full morning and bring water.
Kīlauea Iki Crater Rim (Big Island) — The Kīlauea Iki loop in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park drops 400 feet into the 1959 lava lake and crosses a frozen lava plain that's still venting steam. The geology is unlike anything in Hawaii and the scientific explanations on the trail signs are actually interesting. About 4 miles total, 2-3 hours.
Diamond Head Summit (Oahu) — Yes, it's touristy. But the pre-dawn hike to catch the sunrise from the summit bunker is genuinely different from the midday tourist experience. First entry at 6am, sunrise hike requires arriving at the parking lot by 5:30am and the lot does fill. Reservations required.
